Federal Express Entry

Overview

The Government of Canada operates a selection system for choosing Economic immigrants to Canada. This system is called Express Entry.

Canada’s Express Entry system is an immigrant selection process used by the Canadian government’s department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to select skilled immigrants and their accompanying families to become Permanent residents of Canada.

In order to enter the pool, eligible candidates must meet the Canadian Express Entry requirements by qualifying for one of the Canadian Federal immigration programs.

The Express Entry System for economic immigrants for Canada is open to applicants from anywhere in the world, and from within Canada. All applicants, no matter where they live and no matter what their citizenship are evaluated on the same Express Entry points system. The applicants receiving the highest points are then invited to come to Canada as Canadian permanent residents.

Federal Immigration Programs

Express Entry manages applications for Canadian permanent residence status under several Federal economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is designed for individuals with strong English language skills; good education; and good employment experience. Applicants are scored on a points system, with a 67 point Passmark required to be able to enter the Express Entry Pool.

Both independent Language Testing and Assessment of Educational Qualifications is required before a client may apply to enter the Express Entry Pool

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

This program is for individuals with experience and qualifications in a skilled trade occupation (plumber; electrician; welder, as examples).

Language testing is required; Proof of ability to meet a Provincial trade certification requirement is required; or the client must have a job offer in a skilled trade position from one or more Canadian employers.

  • Canadian Experience Class

Individuals who have studied in Canada and then worked for one year; or worked in Canada on a valid Work Permit or other valid employment status for one year, may qualify to apply through the Canadian Experience Class to enter the Express Entry Pool.
